G Mercer Eskmills first greenkeeper
In 1968 Eskmills Paper Mill closed and the recreational facilities were given by the Jardine family to the YMCA who then became responsible for the upkeep.  Over the next few years the bowling green deteriorated as the YMCA didn’t have sufficient funds to spend on this facility.  As a result, in 1982 moves were made to establish a private Bowling Club and a committee was formed led by Louis Millar as President and David Thomson as Vice President.  Enquiries were made at that time to buy the bowling green from the YMCA but the cost was prohibitive and the green was therefore leased from the YMCA when Kirkhill Bowling Club was formed in 1983.  Membership in 1983 was limited to 200 although some of these were non playing members.  Some of the original members viz David Buchan, Cathy Pender and Fay Young are still active members of the club.
